off to Shanghai!

by andrew corn

I’m about to walk out the door and head to Shanghai for a week so despite having lots of updates to post I’ll be out of touch for at least one more week.

Shanghai will be a great adventure I’m sure but the first adventure will involve me going 3 hours by Bus to Guilin where I will fly for 1.5 hours to Shanghai.

Hope everyone has a safe National Week!

I was looking at flights on air asia the other day and noticed that they had flights from china to bangkok for 28 Kuai or about $3.50.  The flights are good from Jan till June which is great because we get a month off of classes for Spring Festival (around February) but you have to purchase your ticket by Tue. Sept 18.  The problem with that is that the dates for our vacation have not been set yet.  In fact the exact dates for October break  have not been set yet either.

After traveling to Changsha and ZhuZhou the last two weekends I figured it was time to stay in the city that I am to call home for the next year. Having every Friday off work can be a great thing when traveling or if you have other things to do, but when your alone in a city where nobody speaks the same language as you it can be a bit lonely. Luckily I had enough work on this website and other small errands to keep me busy till Saturday.

yummy . . . Bird Flu

All around the campus of my school you can find chickens walking around pecking at the hoards of trash that line every street. It’s pretty filthy but I know that I couldn’t live an entire year avoiding eggs and chicken meat so when I was at the market the other day and I saw a lady selling chickens I knew it was time to purchase my first chicken.

After arriving in Yongzhou from orientation I was informed that teaching would not begin for approximately 10 days and after a few days of exploring the city I determined a return to Changsha was in order. Once arriving in the city I dropped of my bags and after some confusion of where we were hanging out that night went back to the HuaXia hotel for a reunion with the guards. Definitely going to miss those guys. The next night was spent back on walking street and 15th floor bar. We left the bar around 2am and since there was a return train back to Yongzhou for 4 am I took a quick shower and returned back home. On the train ride I met a fellow foreign English teacher named Owen. Owen is from Uzbekistan and in addition to Russian speaks English fairly well. (well enough to teach oral English to a bunch of Chinese kids that is!)
